Australia’s Brisbane named host of 2032 Olympics – NBC Chicago
The Australian city of Brisbane will host the 2032 Summer Olympics after the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday approved the recommendation of its board of directors.
Brisbane, where a crowd gathered to watch the ad on the big screen, became the third Australian city to host the Games after Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.
His selection means Australia becomes only the second country in the world, after the United States, to host Summer Olympics in three different cities.
The state capital of Queensland was the preferred host, chosen in February, and gained board approval last month.
Several cities and countries had publicly expressed their interest in hosting the 2032 Games, including Indonesia, the Hungarian capital Budapest, China, Doha in Qatar and the Ruhr Valley region in Germany.
But in a new process adopted by the IOC that does not openly pit cities against each other, Brisbane had already beaten any rivals in February, having been selected as “preferred host”.
The city’s bid had received repeated praise from the IOC for its high percentage of existing venues, support from all levels of government and the private sector, experience in hosting major events and favorable weather, among others. .
A pledge made in April by the Australian government to share infrastructure costs 50-50 with local government allowed Queensland Prime Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk to pass the necessary financial guarantees to the IOC.
The State of Queensland hosted the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The award of the Games to Australia was also a nod to senior IOC member John Coates, current IOC Vice President and one of IOC President Thomas Bach’s closest allies.
Coates, who reaches the IOC’s age limit of 74 in 2024 and will be forced to leave the organization, had tried unsuccessfully to win the 1992 Games for Brisbane which were ultimately awarded to Barcelona.
The IOC overhauled its tendering rules in 2019 to cut costs and make the process easier for cities. There are no official candidate cities campaigning before the vote as has been the case in the past.
Instead, the IOC chooses a preferred host after discussions with all interested cities, and then puts that city to a vote in its session.
Tokyo is hosting the postponed 2020 Olympics this week and Paris will host the 2024 Games. Los Angeles won the 2028 Summer Olympics.
