Disability Sports Australia announces partnership with Victorian Government
Wednesday, November 9, 2022
Disability Sports Australia (DSA) is pleased to announce today a partnership with the Victorian Government through its Major Sporting Events program to support the upcoming 2022 Toyota Wheelchair AFL National Championships.
Organized by DSA in partnership with the Australian Football League (AFL), the national championship offers the opportunity for people with and without disabilities to participate together.
Wheelchair AFL is a modified, all-inclusive game of Australian rules football played in a sports wheelchair.
The game is played between two teams of five, plus interchangeable players, on a rectangular indoor pitch divided into thirds with portable goal posts at either end of the pitch. Scoring is the same as the traditional AFL: six points for a goal, one point for a behind.
There is no kicking the ball. A handball is equivalent to a kick (e.g. if scored, play stops) and an underarm throw is equivalent to a handball (e.g. the ball is “in play” and the receiving player an underarm throw may be “tackled”).
This announcement continues the momentum the AFL wheelchair sport has recently generated with the return of the National Championship after a nearly three-year pandemic hiatus.
Murray Elbourn, CEO of Disability Sports Australia, is delighted to have the support of this event saying “we are delighted that the Victorian Government recognizes the importance of our upcoming Toyota Wheelchair AFL National Championships to the disability sport sector”
“Investing in national events such as this is an important step in supporting the exceptional partnership we have developed with the AFL, which will create new participation opportunities for the sport nationwide”
The event will take place at the newly reopened state-of-the-art Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Center in Greensborough, run by Aligned Leisure.
Kayo Sports will broadcast all of the competition’s Division 1 matches starting Wednesday, November 23, and the final series for both divisions on Friday, November 25.
